WHILE New Clark City will be hosting most of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games events, basketball will be held at the Araneta Coliseum, volleyball at the Mall of Asia Arena, while the initial plan is for the opening ceremony to be held at the Philippine Arena.

New Clark City, where a multi-million stadium is being built, is also set to host the closing ceremony and is being eyed as a back-up venue if the Philippine Arena won't be available for the opening of the November 30 to December 10 showpiece.

“The plan (is to hold opening) at the Philippine Arena. We are going in the level of digital, you could just imagine the digital lighting of the flame. But of course we have a backup of the normal, traditional opening ceremony that we go to the open national athletic stadium,” said  Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (Phisgoc) executive director Tats Suzara.

“Closing in Clark, iba talaga from the opening,” he added.

Suzara is confident volleyball and basketball can fill the MOA Arena and Araneta Coliseum, which can accommodate 16,000 to 20,000, respectively.

Cuneta Astrodome will be a backup venue for basketball.

“Being a big venue also and it's very close to the general public for transportation,” said Suzara during the SEA Games Federation Council Meeting.

“The initial agreement that we are putting both popular sports in a big venue. That is the intention of the organizing committee,” he added.

Meanwhile, football will be held at Rizal Memorial Sports Complex while boxing and gymnastics will be at SMX Convention Center.

Swimming, aquatics and shooting will be held in Clark, while triathlon, duathlon, sailing and sepak takraw will be hosted by Subic.
