Philippine ice hockey team moves past Malaysia and into gold medal match against Thais

KUALA LUMPUR – The Philippine men’s hockey team eked out a thrilling 2-1 win in a shootout with Malaysia on Wednesday night at the Empire City Arena in Damsara Perdana to reach the gold medal match in the 29th Southeast Asian Games.

Carlo Montano scored the winning goal in the three-man shootout to set up a showdown with Thailand for the first-ever hockey gold in the regional meet.

Philippines and Malaysia ended regulation at 7-all and remained tied after the five-minute extra period, paving the way for the sudden-death shootout.

Unbeaten in three matches, the Philippine ice hockey bets look complete a four-match sweep of the single-round tournament against the Thais late Thursday and add to the country’s gold haul.
