Thomas Bruins tops Powerman Asian Championships at Clark

CLARK Freeport Zone — Thomas Bruins of the Netherlands ruled the Powerman Classic Elite in in two hours, 57 minutes and 28 seconds on Sunday.

Australia’s Matt Smith finished the 10km run, 60km and 10km run second in three hours seven minutes and 46 seconds, while Filipino athlete Emmanuel Commendador was third in 3:09:20.

“I executed my race plan perfectly. It’s a really hot race but no one gave up. I’m really happy,” said Bruins.

“Filipinos are very fast and strong runners. This race is the best Powerman, I really enjoyed it. It’s really a good race,” he added.

Local bet Miscelle Gilbuena won the women’s Classic Elite race in 3:39:34, followed by Australia’s Alexandra McDougall in 3:40:44.

Jarwyn Banatao won the Short Elite category in 1:24:01, edging Jason Loh of Malaysia (1:25:26) And Cipriane John Topia ( 1:27:04).

“Kamuntik na akong tumigil talaga sa likod nya pero pinilit ko lang kasi alam ko bike kaya ko eh. Pinaghandaan ko yung bike, alam ko maigsi lang. Pero hindi ko inexpect kasi naligaw daw siya sa U-turn kaya umagwat pa ako ng umagwat,” said Banatao.

Japan’s Airi Sawada topped the Short Elite race in 1 hour 35 minutes and 19 seconds, beating Bic Ferreria of Philippines (2:10:19).
