MERVIN Guarte of Philippine Air Force dominated the 1,500-meter run on Tuesday in the athletics competition of the 2014 Philippine National Games at the Philsports Complex in Pasig City.
Guarte, silver medalist in last year’s Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar, clocked three minutes and 55.10 seconds to beat Wenlie Maulas of Air Force teammate (3:58.30), and Roldan Verano of PLDT A (3:59.74).
Divina Kitongan of Baguio won in the distaff side with a time of 5:01.85, beating Floredeliza Donos of Philippine Air Force (5:03.52) and Jila Dela Rosa of University of Santo Tomas (5:04.89).
UST ruled the 4x100m junior men relay with Romnick Nor, Jay Patrick Nieles, Roque Lesondra, and Dustine Jorelle Devera submitting a time of 43.87 seconds.
The UST tracksters won the gold by a mere 0.04 seconds over the LSA-Smart Altas Team A of Francis Medina, Roy Gammag, Alfredo Davidas Jr., and Jhonrey Mabuyao.
LSA-Smart Altas Team A got a measure of revenge in the junior women’s division of the same event as Karen Janario, Rosemarie Olorvida, Leah Joan Creer, and Melissa Escoton won in 49.24 seconds.
UST’s Eloiza Luzon, Aldee Faith Denuyo, Rechelle Abotalmo, and Glaiza Salcedo finished second in 49.83.
Avery Cuyugan of Mapua took the shotput juniors men gold with a throw of 13.54 meters, .04 meters better than Gary Santiago of UST.
Matrix Jasmine Ortiz of University of the Philippines ruled the hammer throw juniors women event after a throw of 27.14 meters.
In wrestling, Jason Balabal of Ifugao, the country’s flag bearer in the 2013 Southeast Asian Games, topped the 85kg Greco-Roman while Margarito Angana of Zamboanga took the gold in the 59kg division of the same event.
