FAR Eastern University’s Evalyn Palabrica bagged a silver medal in her first international tournament, finishing behind Southeast Asian Games champion Natta Nachan of Thailand in the javelin event of the 16th Asean University Games on Saturday in Vientiane, Laos.
After three days of competitions, Team UAAP-Philippines has bagged two gold, three silver and three bronze medals for sixth place. Former champion Malaysia continued to pull away in the standings in the week-long competitions organized by the Asean University Sports Council.
The Malaysians now have a 15-12-16 gold-silver-bronze haul, followed by Vietnam with a 14-13-9 tally, defending overall champion Thailand with a 10-12-15 haul, host Laos at 10-7-15 and Indonesia at 3-8-21.
Nachan won the gold with a throw of 45.79 meters, while Palabrica recorded 45.43 meters. Palabrica surpassed the 44.73-meter UAAP record she set while competing for reigning nine-time champion Lady Tamaraws in the UAAP just last week.
FEU’s Josie Malacad placed third in the women’s 400-meter race with a time of 56.92 behind Vietnamese duo Nguyen Thi Thuy (55.18) and Nguyen Thi Huyen (56.34).
University of Santo Tomas’ Paul Romero and University of the Philippines’ Gio de Dios bagged silver medals in the taekwondo tournament.
Romero dropped a 4-8 decision to Laotian Sonexay Mangkheua in the men’s bantamweight match, while lightweight De Dios suffered a 1-9 loss to Thailand’s Chodsuthan Chanteerawong.
Team UAAP-Philippines earlier won two gold medals courtesy of Season 75 men’s taekwondo MVP Christian Al dela Cruz and his UST teammate Ernest John Mendoza.
