De La Salle Alumni Association's OROFOLS turns into a sunset run for a change

    Jun 6, 2014

FUN runners wishing to experience a sunset run in the countryside will get the chance as De La Salle Alumni Association (DLSAA) and the College of Science chapter stage the fourth 'One Run, One Family, One La Salle (OROFOLS)' run at the De La Salle University-Science and Technology Complex (DLSU-STC) in Biñan, Laguna on July 19.

The OROFOLS, DLSAA’s signature running event, will have the distinction of being a “sunset fun run” this year, with the gun start set at 4 p.m. for the 5k event and 5 p.m. for the 3k run.

The run will cover a route of mostly concrete level ground with around 200 meters of rough road within the DLSU-STC campus. Apart from being the first sunset OROFOLS, this year’s OROFOLS will be the first to be held inside a La Salle campus, and the first to host a mini-concert after the run.

As with past OROFOLS, “One Run, One Family, One La Salle: A Sunset Fun Run at DLSU-STC” will benefit a Lasallian cause. This year’s beneficiary will be the DLSAA Scholarship Fund.

“The overall mandate of OROFOLS is to be an instrument of One La Salle, thus advocating communion in mission for education, environment, as well as for the other Lasallian advocacies,” said DLSAA’s executive director Benjie Uichico.

A part of the proceeds will also go to the DLSAA Science and Technology Scholarship Fund, as announced by DLSAA president Derrick Yu.

“Science and Technology is a major factor in our country’s development. Let’s actively do our part as Lasallians in contributing to nation-building by increasing our Science and Technology human resource,” Yu said.

The choice of DLSU-STC campus as venue goes in line with another DLSAA objective which is to help promote DLSU-STC, an expansive DLSU satellite campus housing some of the university’s science and engineering courses.

OROFOLS over the years has earned a following among middle distance and fun runners, but this year’s run will only include fun running distances of 3k and 5k, without the distances of 10k and 16k.

While the current sunset fun run format attracts an even wider audience of non-competitive leisure runners who simply wish to enjoy a run, with no pressure of waking up too early or complying with strict cut-off times, Uichico explains that this change in format will be temporary.

“The distances will increase as the DLSU-STC campus continues to develop its infrastructure. Eventually, the size of the road network in this 51-hectare institution will be able to accommodate distances of 10K and 16K,” said Uichico.

As with past OROFOLS, non-Lasallian runners are welcome to participate. Deadline of registration is on June 19, 2014.

Registration fees, set at P500 for 3k and P600 for 5k, entitle all runners to a ticket each for the after-run mini-concert. A P100 discount will be given to La Salle students, employees, DLSAA lifetime members, senior citizens and persons with disability.

A Timex wrist watch will be up for grabs for the best runner, while the top 40 runners will receive medals. Other prizes include gift certificates from Fitness First and Microtel, plus a host of more freebies.

Interested runners can download the registration form at www.dlsaa.com. Online registration is available at www.spin.ph. Runners may also register at the following registration centers: DLSAA (Manila), La Salle Green Hills (Mandaluyong), La Salle Zobel (Muntinlupa), DLS-College of St. Benilde (Manila), DLSU-STC (Laguna), DLS-Health Sciences Institute (Cavite), De La Salle Lipa (Batangas), DLSU-Dasmariñas (Cavite), and DLS-Araneta University (Malabon).
