A TOTAL of 685 participants competed under clear skies and a challenging route during the Active Health Duathlon held over the weekend at the South Clark exit of SCTEX (Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway) in Pampanga.
Team Unilab Active Health’s August Benedicto pulled off a come-from-behind win against Robeno Javier of the Philippine team, who led the race during the first six kilometers of the run leg and the first lap of the 40km bike stage.
“I overtook Robeno during the first 10km of the bike leg. It was a great race, the weather was just right and the route was challenging enough. I am happy to have improved on my time even for just a few minutes,” said Benedicto, who clocked one hour, 36 minutes and 30 seconds to top the 6km run-40km bike-4km run race.
Javier, who finished in second place with a time of 1:38:26, said he found the route difficult. “Maraming paahon na parte, medyo mahirap. But the weather was nice.”
Carlo Pedregoza finished another 24 seconds behind Javier to grab the last place in the podium.
Meanwhile, Mirasol Abad finished strong to rule the women's race with a 1:52:50 time. Team Unilab Active Health’s Kim Mangrobang took the silver medal in 1:55:54, while third place went to Sandra Araullo-Gonzalez (1:56:49).
“I am happy about my time and it’s good to be back here in this duathlon,” said Abad.
The top three winners in the men and women’s division took home cash prizes worth P10,000, P8,000 and P7,000 plus gift items and vouchers from the organizer and sponsors.
The age-group category winners in the race sponsored by Unilab Active Health and organized by Bike King were Claire Adorna and Jaime Miguel Navarro (18-24); Chloe Ong and Christopher Iblan (25-29); Mercy Go and Angelo Gonzalo (30-34); Camilla Brooks and Abe Tayag (35-39); Bernadette Tan and Junrox Roque (40-44); Tina Reyes and Enrico Rosin (45-49), Thomas Kuhne (Male 50-54) and Nol Espino (Male 55-over).
“We are very thankful to all the participants who continue to patronize UNILAB Active Health’s Multisport calendar. Together with the race organizers, it is our desire to continuously provide them with quality races that can serve as a tool to measure how much they have progressed in their chosen sport,” said Lester P. Castillo, Unilab Active Health Sports Events and PR executive.
Unilab Active Health is now prepping for two races next month — the Run United Philippine Marathon on October 6 in SM Mall of Asia/Bonifacio Global City, and Tri United 3 on October 27 in Subic.
