Philippine Volcanoes end HK Asian Sevens campaign with romp over Malaysia

    Aug 25, 2014

THE Philippine Volcanoes beat Malaysia 24-7 to finish seventh among 12 teams in the Hong Kong Asian Sevens.

Andrew Wolff grabbed a brace, Gareth Holgate scored a converted try and Sean Lynch also touched down against the Malaysians as the Volcanoes signed off on a winning note after a campaign that started in fine style lost momentum on the final morning of the two-day competition at the Hong Kong Football Club.

The Volcanoes had hoped to contend for Cup glory after finishing second behind eventual champions Hong Kong in Pool D on Saturday.

But their dreams were quickly shattered by a 29-12 defeat to South Korea in the Cup quarter-finals, followed by a 21-7 loss to China in the Plate semi-finals.

The Koreans proved to be the surprise of the tournament as they upset powerhouse Japan 28-21 in the Cup semi-finals.

However, they proved no match for hosts Hong Kong, who won the final 40-0 and installed themselves as contenders for rugby sevens gold at next month’s Asian Games in Incheon.

Volcanoes young gun Ned Stephenson, handed a two-game suspension for fighting in the 31-0 opening-day Pool D win over Kazakhstan, sat out the match against South Korea. He also missed Saturday’s group-stage clash with Hong Kong, a 24-0 victory for the hosts.

Wolff finished as the team’s top try scorer with four, while Holgate scored the most points with 22 on two tries and six conversions.

The three-leg Asian Sevens Series continues in Kuala Lumpur on September 6-7 with the Malaysia Sevens. It will conclude with the China Sevens in Beijing on October 18-19.

Meanwhile, the Lady Volcanoes scored their first tries of the tournament but they were not enough to prevent them from losing 28-10 to Singapore and finishing at the bottom of the eight-team women’s field.

Kaye Honoras and Rara Sales were the try scorers.
