    Oct 22, 2014

A KENYAN cyclist was killed in a vehicular accident during the Tour of Matabungkay last October 18 in Ternate, Cavite.

The victim was identified as John Njoroge Muya, a member of the Kenyan Riders team that took part in the two-day biking event.

The 30-year old cyclist was among the group leaders in the day’s course when the accident occurred at around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday along a mountainous portion of Governor’s Drive in Barangay Sapang II.

According to, Muya was rounding a slope during a steep descent when a black Hyundai Accent sedan emerged from the opposite direction after disregarding marshal’s instructions for uphill traffic to stop and pull off the road to let the cyclists pass.

Witnesses said Muya was unable to avoid the vehicle by passing on the left side of the narrow mountain road and was thrown to the ground after a head-on collision.

An ambulance immediately rushed the victim, who sustained head and body trauma to the Naic Doctors Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival.

Police arrested the driver of the Hyundai who is now facing homicide charges.

Race organizers declined to immediately comment on the incident, pending the notification of Muya’s family in eastern Africa.

In a statement released on the Tour of Matabugkay Facebook page on Wednesday, the organizers said it “is deeply saddened with the loss of John Njoroge Muya of Kenyan Rider” and will help in efforts to return his remains to Kenya.

“We enjoin all of our supporters to offer their prayers to the family and friends of our fallen companion. Tour of Matabungkay are assisting John's family in repatriation of his remains. It is for this reason we are organizing a fund drive to help his family with this heavy burden. We hope that you can join us in our efforts in easing the burden on his family in this very difficult time.”
