Trouble brewing as PH dragon boat airs gripes

Jul 16, 2013

TROUBLE appears to be brewing once again in the sport of dragon boat.

A source told Spin.ph the national dragon boat team met with the two highest sports officials of the land in a closed-door meeting at the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) office on Tuesday.

The group, the source added, aired its grievances to Philippine Olympic Committee president (POC) Jose ‘Peping’ Cojuangco and PSC chairman Ricardo Garcia against the Philippine Canoe Kayak Federation (PCKF), the duly recognized national sports association for the sport.

Dragon boat was buffeted by controversies in the past after the Philippine Dragon Boat Federation (PDBF) lost its POC recognition to the PCKF following a ‘directive’ from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that all dragon boat affairs should be handled by the canoe kayak federation.

Despite losing its recognition, the PDBF continued with its organization and even did the country proud by winning five gold medals in the world championships in Tampa in 2011 despite the absence of funding from the government.
