THE Philippine Sports Commission urged local government units to follow the footsteps of other cities and provinces in prioritizing sports.

PSC commissioner Ramon Fernandez said the government sports agency has been encouraging LGUs to focus on a few sports where they believe they can shine.

Fernandez cited Cebu and Zamboanga Del Sur as LGUs with their own sports programs.

“Cebu has about 10 priority sports, same with Zamboanga del Sur which has a sports academy at meron silang 10 priority sports,” said Fernandez.

“We suggested to them na mamili sila ng priority sports, mga five to 10, depende sa kakayahan nila,” said Fernandez.

“Each town should have a sports program. Kung sino ‘yung magagaling sa inter-town, dadalhin sa mga provincial meets,” said Fernandez.

The PSC recently held its Sports Caravan in Naga for the Bicol Region, and is scheduled to hold another meeting with LGUs in Batangas and Baguio this week.
