THE PBA teamed up with rival factions San Miguel Corp. and the MVP Sports Foundation as they handed out a much-needed assist to the Philippine Olympic Committee in the run-up to the Asian Games in August and the Southeast Asian Games next year.

Both the SMC and MVP groups handed cheques for P20 million apiece to the country's highest Olympic body, now headed by league chairman Ricky Vargas, while the PBA will be shelling out P6 million after getting a contribution of P500,000 per team.

Vargas said the donors will be choosing the sport to support and act as the ‘godfathers’ to these athletes and programs.

“I would like to thank the PBA, SMC and MVPSF for their contribution. These are all directed towards the NSAs and the athletes for the Southeast Asian Games and Asian Games,” said Vargas. “We are all very thankful for these contibutions. All of these, para sa atleta, para sa bayan, para sa programa.”

PBA commissioner Willie Marcial said that it was the initiative of the board of governors to help out their own in the recent board meeting in Hong Kong.

Given the opportunity, SMC sports director Al Francis Chua said that the group didn't think twice when asked to help.

“San Miguel naman kung saan kami makakatulong sa atleta. We’re supporting our president, our chairman, Mr. Ricky Vargas. My boss, Ramon S. Ang, donated P20 million para makatulong sa atletang Pilipino,” said Chua.

“Si Commissioner Willie ang nag-suggest na pwede lakihan namin because we’re supporting our chairman. He’s part of the family. When Mr. Marcial called us na lakihan namin ang ibibigay, yun ang ginawa namin lahat to show na magtutulungan kaming mga governors.”
