Mikee Romero-led PH GlobalPort team stamps class in SPP Polo Cup in Bangkok

    Nov 27, 2014

THE Philippine-GlobalPort Polo team reinforced its status as one of the toughest teams in the region by ruling the kick-off tournament of the Thailand Polo Association’s SPP Polo Cup in Bangkok.

Fast and creative on offense and rock-solid on defense, PH-Globalport outclassed Royal Selangor-Malaysia, 10-3, to win the title before a big Sunday crowd.

Led by team captain Mikee Romero, PH-Globalport made its intention known early by attacking relentlessly and eventually exposing the weaknesses of the Malaysian side.

“We’re so eager to settle the game that’s why we attacked and attacked their lair,” said Romero. “That opened opportunities for us to score and we did.”

All four players did a splendid job as Romero, Adrian Garcia and Nicolai Galindo scored three goals each, while Ricardo Garcia, son of Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richie Garcia, maneuvered brilliantly to score one against a team led by well-known Mazlan brothers, Ali and Omar.

Romero said their win should serve as an extra motivation for the squad to improve further as it intends to compete in tougher tournaments in the future.

PH-GlobalPort advanced to the one-game face-off after pulling off a come-from-behind win over Kingpower-Thailand, 6-5.5 – thanks to a dramatic goal in the last minute.

“It was one our best wins so far. We thought we’re already goners but we persevered,” said Romero.

Singapore Polo captain Stijn Walker also played in the tournament alongside Thailand’s captain Tal Srivadhanpprabha.
