PH weightlifter Nestor Colonia gets nod to compete at Rio Olympics
Nestor Colonia will be competing in the men’s 56kg weightlifting competition in Rio.

NESTOR Colonia became the latest Filipino athlete to qualify for the Rio De Janeiro Olympics.

In a letter to the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), the International Weightlifting Federation conferred Colonia with a berth in the men’s 56kg weightlifting competition of the Rio Games.

“Nestor Colonia’s confirmation as a Rio 2016 Olympic qualifier is a fitting reward for Colonia’s determined effort to be among the world’s best," POC first vice president Joey Romasanta said.

With the confirmation, Colonia joins Hidilyn Diaz, who is making her third Olympic appearance in Rio. The two weightlifters will also be part of the growing Philippine Olympic delegation that already includes Rogen Ladon and Charly Suarez of boxing, Kirstie Elaine Alora of taekwondo, Ian Lariba of table tennis, and Eric Cray and Mary Joy Tabal of athletics.

Two more golfers in Miguel Tabuena and Angelo Que are still vying for slots although Tabuena is a shoo-in as he is in the top 40 of the world rankings. The best 60 golfers based on rankings will make it to Rio.

Two swimmers will also join the delegation, which will be bared in July.
