Benilde volleyball ace John Vic de Guzman comes out swinging in acting debut

FROM intimidating foes with his strong spikes and dominating presence on the court, College of St. Benilde top hitter John Vic de Guzman is out to scare moviegoers this Christmas season as part of the movie Seklusyon in the 2016 Metro Manila Film Festival.

The graduating Blazer, who plays a deacon named Marco in his first acting role, admitted having a rough start during filming. But de Guzman drew from the confidence he gained in playing volleyball to shake off the nerves.

"Napakalaking bagay talaga ng confidence, hindi talaga pwedeng mawala 'yun sa acting kasi kasama ko doon mga artista. Kinakabahan ako noong una. Tiwala lang talaga," he said.

De Guzman shared that just like volleyball tryouts, he also auditioned for the role.

"Pinapunta ako one day sa QC (Quezon City) ng agency namin, which is Virtual Playground, pina-try ako kung gusto ko umarte," he recalled. "Then nakuha ako. Nag-workshop ako mga one week after ako makuha."

Volleyball and acting are two vastly different fields but De Guzman still finds similarities between the two as both give him a sense of satisfaction — even as they are equally physically and mentally draining.

"Ako, sobrang saya ko kahit talagang nakakapagod," he said. "Same lang ang pag-enjoy ko sa acting and volleyball."

"Sa volleyball kasi more on physical 'yung exhaustion - sa kaka-exert mo sa sarili sa kakagalaw. Sa acting kasi, iba 'yung mental toll," he added.

"Kailangan talaga mataas 'yung mental capacity mo, 'yung patience mo. Halos parehas lang siguro 'yung pagod pero sa acting kasi nasa isip ko lagi na ipapalabas 'yan sa public."
