ACTOR Jerome Ponce played the role of supportive boyfriend on Monday night when he accompanied Mika Reyes to the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Awards Night, where the former La Salle star was honored as Miss Volleyball for 2016.

The couple was a sight to behold on the eve of Valentine's Day, never letting go of each other's hands except when Reyes went on stage at the Le Pavillon in Pasay City to accept the award, looked effortlessly elegant - and tall - alongside the country's best athletes.

Out of his own comfort zone, Ponce, wearing a black suit, let Reyes have her moment when people started swarming around the Petron star, whose long, red gown by Tony Evan made her look like she was strutting her stuff in a pageant's evening gown competition.

"Well syempre she deserves it, she deserves kung ano man ang pinaghirapan niya," said the proud boyfriend.

If the PSA hands out a 'Couple of the Night' award, Ponce and Reyes would've walked away with it, but the Kapamilya actor was quick to defer to his girlfriend who, he said, deserved the Miss Volleyball award for all the sacrifices she has done to get to where she is now.

"No one knows kung anong pinagdaanan niya except siya lang. May kinuwento naman siya some sa akin but that's already too much for me, 'yung some na 'yun na naging effort niya at hirap niya sobra na sa akin kaya para sa akin she deserves it," he added.

The Kapamilya actor, who rose to fame for his role as Luke in the hit noontime teleserye Be Careful With My Heart, is also the former La Salle star's first line of defense against haters on social media.

"Para sa akin wala naman magbabago, mabasa mo man o hindi (ang nasa social media), siguro 'yung mga taong may pakialam lang sa mga bashers (ang maaapektuhan). Kaya lagi ko sinasabi sa kanya, baliwalain na lang niya," he said.

Waiting in one corner while Reyes gave a final round of interview, Ponce couldn't help but beam proudly from a distance.

Although the couple labelled 'MiRome' by their fans can be a power love team, Ponce doesn't expect his girl to venture into his world anytime soon, saying showbiz simply isn't Reyes' cup of tea.

"Hindi naman kami nag-uusap regarding that (Mika entering showbiz) and mukhang hindi naman siya interesado, minsan pa-joke joke pero hindi talaga," he said.
