THE UAAP board will likely update the classification of individual awardees in both the men’s and women’s volleyball tournaments in Season 81 that fires off next month.
UE athletic director Rod Roque, a member of the board, bared that the league is seeking to change the format of the individual awards to honor players per position, to conform to international standards set by the FIVB and AVC.
At present, the UAAP men’s and women’s volleyball leagues are left as the lone major tournaments that give awards to players for Best Attacker, Best Scorer, Best Server, Best Blocker, Best Digger, Best Receiver and Best Setter.
The NCAA, PSL, PVL, Rebisco Volleyball League and even the UAAP Girls’ division honor players by position: 1st and 2nd Best Outside Hitters, 1st and 2nd Best Middle Blockers, Best Opposite Hitter, Best Setter and Best Libero.
Roque and the UAAP board will tackle the changes during a two-day meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday at the National University campus. They will also talk about the eligibility of players in second semester sports, the invitation of women’s national volleyball pool tryouts of Larong Volleyball Sa Pilipinas Inc. and updates on rules and regulations in all sporting events.
“Well, isa yan sa napagusapan naming innovations sa volleyball. Sabi namin susundan namin yung international (format) kasi by position ang international e,” said Roque, who is also the representative of UAAP to the LVPI.
Roque, who is also part of the eligibility committee of the UAAP, believes that the changes in awarding will be implemented this season.
“So we might do it this year so depende tomorrow kung ma-approve then we will implement right away kasi mas marami kang mabibigyan kung by position e,” he said. “Pabor sa players, mas maganda.”
