TERRENCE Fortea had 26 points, Harold Alarcon added 18 points as the Philippines defeated Singapore, 117-59, to advance to the semifinals of the 10th Asean School Games boys basketball tournament in Malaysia.
Dominic Dayrit added 15 points, while Kevin Quiambao had 12 points for the Philippine squad which has National University as its core. NU went 2-0 in the preliminaries after a 123-point blowout over Brunei.
Fortea hit six of his eight triples to set the tone for the Philippines, which will face Thailand in the crossover semifinals. The Thais dropped to No. 2 in the other group after losing to Malaysia in overtime, 90-86.
Ooi Xian Fu had 22 points, and John Tang Jun Kai had 16 points for Malaysia. Both players are members of the Malaysia squad that played in last year’s Seaba Under-16 and this year’s Fiba Under-16 Asian Championship.
The Thais lost despite a 39-point effort by Pongsakorn Jaimasawad.
