TAGUM City, Davao Del Norte, Iloilo and Iloilo Province and Ilagan, Isabela have signed agreements with the Philippine Sports Commission as hosts of the 2019 Batang Pinoy.
Representatives from the local government units and PSC chairman William Ramirez signed the agreement on Friday, formalizing their hosting of the Mindanao, Visayas and Luzon qualifying legs of the Batang Pinoy.
The Mindanao leg is scheduled February 2 to 9 in Tagum, while the Visayas leg will be jointly hosted by Iloilo City and Iloilo province from February 23 to March 2. The Luzon leg will be held from March 16 to 23 in Ilagan.
The top performers in each of the three legs will head to the Batang Pinoy national finals set October either in Tagbilaran City or Ormoc City.
“When we assumed office, we would like to stop it and focus on the Palarong Pambansa but there were negative reaction na dapat ipagpatuloy ‘to to complement the Palarong Pambansa,” said Ramirez.
Davao Del Norte provincial sports and youth development head Giovanni Gulanes said the province is looking forward to hosting the first qualifying leg.
“We are one with the PSC that the highway to development of producing gold medals and a healthy citizenry is really to go down to the grassroots level. We see the Batang Pinoy as the opportunity to realize this,” said Gulanes.
The sports to be played in the qualifying legs are archery, arnis, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, chess, dancesport, futsal, karatedo, lawn tennis, pencak silat, sepak takraw, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, volleyball and beach volleyball.
Sports that will no longer hold qualifying legs and will be played in the national finals outright are cycling, gymnastics, judo, muay, rugby football, triathlon, weightlifting, wrestling and wushu.
