PLDT team captain Sue Roces admits overconfidence led to team's downfall

    Jul 22, 2014

SUE Roces admitted PLDT Home TVolution-Air Force admitted the team took it easy a bit, leading to a three-set 18-25, 16-25, 15-25 loss to Philippine Army in the Shakey’s V-League Open Conference a day after typhoon Glenda struck the metropolis.

The 29-year old spiker admitted their minds were not in the game against the Troopers, costing them to suffer their first loss after winning four straight games to open the tournament.

Coach Roger Gorayeb later told reporters not to ask him about the loss but the players themselves.

“Lahat kami di maka-kilos, nasa isip lang namin pero yung katawan namin 'di gumagalaw. Sabi ni coach binagyo din daw ba kami," Roces told Spin.ph on Tuesday after the team bounced back with a 25-16, 25-23, 24-26, 25-19 victory over National University.

    PLDT improved to 5-1 overall.

Roces said the team’s winning streak and the fact that PLDT already made it to the quarterfinals along with Army (4-0), Cagayan Valley (3-1), and Air Force (3-2) also added up to the team’s carelessness.

“Nag-relax kami, panalo kami ng apat na sunud-sunod tapos natalo kami sa Army. Nag-relax kami lahat eh,” said the PLDT team captain. “Nasa isip namin pasok na sa quarterfinals ok na. Dapat hindi ganoon, eh 'yun ang problema namin.”

Roces also rued about her team’s lack of maturity despite having a veteran-laiden roster made up of former collegiate standouts setter Rubie de Leon, Charo Soriano, Sasa Devanadera, and Lou Ann Latigay.

“Bumabalik nga kami sa pagkabata eh which is hindi dapat. Lahat kami sa team na 'to beterano na,” she said.

“Ang daming experience, 'yun 'yung panlaban namin kasi sa lakas alam namin 'di na kami makikisabay pero sa experience at sa talino sa laro doon kami dapat kami lalamang,” she continued.

PLDT will face Air Force on Thursday and Roces hopes to be even more focus on the game.
