PHILIPPINE Olympic Committee (POC) president Ricky Vargas wants 120 gold medals for the Philippines in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
Vargas made the statement on Tuesday morning during the Team Philippines assessment meeting organized by the Philippine Sports Commission at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC).
“I’d like to hear the national anthem of the Philippines in the Southeast Asian Games a 120 times,” said Vargas, referring to the national anthem being played during the medal ceremony of multisports competitions.
Vargas issued the statement in front of 58 national sports associations (NSA) representatives who attended the meeting initiated by PSC chairman and 2019 SEA Games chef de mission William Ramirez to determine the status of the preparation of Team Philippines.
Vargas expressed confidence that the Philippines can succeed in obtaining the target especially if the sports officials unite for the common goal.
The POC chief again called for unity after a controversial general assembly recently with POC president Jose 'Peping' Cojuangco and first vice president Joey Romasanta removed from their positions in key committees.
“We will work this out. With your help, as we continue to move forward, this is achievable. It is doable. And I share the call of the chairman, the CDM, the Board of Commissioners and especially the government to unify and win as one, and be one with each other,” Vargas said.
Vargas is also planning an incentive scheme to motivate the athletes even more for the SEA Games.
“I’ve also spoken to our politicians and private sector to actually work on a reward system if that’s helpful to all athletes that will bring home the gold,” Vargas said.
