TREAT Huey and Denise Dy lost a thrilling mixed doubles match to top-seed Christopher Rungkat and Aldila Sutjiadi of Indonesia, 6-7, 6-3, 13-11, in the 30th Southeast Asian Games tennis tournament at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
Huey and Dy, who won this event in 2015 but came in unranked, took a 9-8 and 11-10 lead in the super tiebreak but failed to finish off the top seeds.
“It was a tough match for sure. We had some chances at the end. Three matchpoints. But didn’t captalize,” said Huey. “Denise played great. She was the reason we were in the match and had some chances to win but they are the number one seed for a reason.”
“I think they played well in the end and they deserved to win. Tough match for us. Definitely, we could have won that. But it happens… Sayang. If we won one of those matchpoints, we have very good chances for the gold,” said Huey.
Unranked AJ Lim, meanwhile, moved to the men’s singles quarterfinals after a 7-6, 6-4 win over eighth-seed Muhammad Shaheed Alam Bin Meqsud Alam of Singapore.
Clarice Patrimonio, however, lost to Savannah Ly Nugyen, 6-2, 6-2, in the women’s singles quarterfinals.
The other mixed doubles pair of Francis Casey Alcantara and Khim Iglupas lost to second-seed Tamarine Tanasugarn and Sanchai Ratiwatana of Thailand, 6-4, 7-5.
