THE country’s chief of mission for the Southeast Asian Games believes the Philippines will surpass its seventh-place finish two years ago and can go as high as fourth place in the next conclave in Singapore.

“We will be better than the last SEA Games,” Julian Camacho vowed on Tuesday during the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum at the Shakey’s Malate.

Camacho, however, said it will be a tough battle with regional powers Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam for the top places and expects host Singapore to give the Philippines a tough time in the battle for fourth place.

Camacho, secretary-general of the Wushu Federation of the Philippines, said he won’t be satisfied with another seventh-place finish even if the country surpasses the 29-gold output in the 2013 Myanmar meet.

“Of course not. We will aim higher than that, of course,” said Camacho.

The seventh place finish in Myanmar in 2013 was the lowest ever for the Philippines in the 11-nation meet.

“Siguro kailangan ding pukpukin ang mga atleta natin. We really have to work hard for that. Tututukan natin ang training nila,” said Camacho.

Camacho noted that host Singapore, sixth in the Myanmar Games, may pull off a surprise.

“They are not aiming for No. 1 for sure. Hindi nila kaya ’yun," Camacho said. "Maybe third or fourth ang aim nila."
