THE squash competitions of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games has been moved to the Manila Polo Club as the court being constructed at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex will not be finished on time.
Philippine Sports Commission commissioner Celia Kiram said the building between the Rizal Memorial Stadium and the Ninoy Aquino Stadium will be finished before the SEA Games. However, delivery of the flooring and equipment ordered purchased in Germany remains uncertain.
“Definitely, matatapos ‘yung building but ‘yung ilalatag nila na special flooring, mangagaling ‘yun sa Germany, baka hindi dumating on time,” said Kiram on Monday.
Mediamen were given a tour by the PSC at the ongoing construction and renovations inside the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex on Monday. While renovations at venues such as the Rizal Memorial Coliseum and Ninoy Aquino Stadium are nearing completion, the squash venue still in the early stages of construction.
Kiram said Philippine Squash Academy president Robert Bachmann has decided to transfer the venue of the SEA Games to the Manila Polo Club where the national team is training.
“Minor na lang ang gagawin sa squash. Pintura na lang at ilaw ilaw, maayos na,” said Kiram.
Kiram, however, said the facility being constructed will serve as a training center for squash as well as for other sports such as table tennis.
“’Yan ang magiging permanent squash training center,” Kiram said.
