Nearly 10,000 athletes and officials from 11 countries attended the ceremony at the 55,000-seater Philippine Arena in Bulacan.
The SEA Games flame cauldron was lit and fireworks brightened the night sky over New Clark City, signaling the official start of the 30th edition of the biennial sports meet.
