OLYMPIC silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz and Paralympic bronze medalist Josephine Medina will lead runners in the 29th Southeast Asian Games’ Rising Together Baton Run to be held on Sunday, March 12.
Diaz and Medina will be joined by Olympians Marestella Torres-Sumang and Joy Tabal of athletics, other members of the national team and staff members from the Presidential Security Group, Senate, and the Office of the President.
The baton run will take a 7.5km-course from the front of the Mabini Hall in Malacañang to the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
The event is a government-to-government initiative by the Philippine Sports Commission and its counterparts in Malaysia to help in creating interest for the coming SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur this August.
“We welcome the government of Malaysia’s enthusiasm. This is a good way to strengthen ties with our neighbors in Southeast Asia,” PSC chairman William Ramirez said in a statement.
The baton run had its first leg in Brunei last March 4 with the Philippines represented by Philippine Ambassador in Brunei, H.E. Meynardo Montealegre and PSC Commissioner Celia Kiram.
After the Philippine leg, the baton will be passed on to Laos before it goes to other member countries of the Southeast Asian Games Council.
