Gilas yet to submit SEA Games lineup, but Ravena, Paras, Standhardinger part of initial list

THE Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) has yet to submit its final lineup for the coming Southeast Asian Games a day after the deadline given by the SEA Games Task Force had lapsed.

PH chef de mission Cynthia Carrion understands the approach being taken by Gilas Pilipinas since the team is taking part in another major international competition in the FIBA Asia Cup that almost runs simultaneously with the SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Carrion, however, is wary the organizing Malaysian SEAG Organizing Committee (MASOC) could try to find a way to disqualify the national cage team if it would continue to delay the submission of its final roster.

SBP assistant executive director Bernie Atienza said the federation will forward both the men and womens’ lineups by the 27th of the month.

As things stand at the moment, the SBP submitted only three names to the Task Force in Kobe Paras, Kiefer Ravena, and Christian Standhardinger just to have an initial list that it can present to the organizing committee.

MASOC has a June 30 deadline for all member countries to submit their final delegation, although the local SEAG Task Force had its cut-off-date last June 15.

“I told Bernie (Atienza) don’t be too late because they may find reason to disqualify us especially in basketball where they know we are very strong,” Carrion told reporters on Friday at the SEA Games Task Force office at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

“If they disqualify the Philippines, the better for them, so I keep telling them (SBP) don’t give them any reason to disqualify us.”

Aside from basketball, three other national federations failed to beat the deadline given by the SEAG Task Force, namely, namely swimming, sailing, and water skiing.

Carrion said the country already submitted to MASOC the rosters of those which managed to submit their lineups on time. She will hold talks with the organizers on June 20 to ask that an extension be given to the country pending the compliance of the four associations.

“We have to follow the rules of MASOC. If they don’t give us the extension, I told Bernie, you have to give it to me whether you like it or not,” said Carrion, who is also the president of the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP).

The country is the defending men’s champion in basketball, a sport the Filipinos had won in every staging of the SEA Games except in 1989 in Malaysia.
