KUALA LUMPUR - Teenage fencers made waves in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games as they produced two medals on Monday at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Center.
Two-time UAAP juniors MVP Samantha Kyle Catantan settled for a silver medal in the women's foil individual after bowing to Amita Marie Nicolette Berthi of Singapore, 15-7.
Maxine Isabel Esteban, meanwhile, reached the semifinals in the same event that assured herself of a bronze medal. The 16-year-old eventually lost to Berthi in the final four that prevented an all-Filipina finals.
The 15-year-old Catantan barely made it to the finals after beating Nicole Mae Wong Hui Shan of Singapore, 15-14, after coming back from a 14-10 deficit.
Esteban, meanwhile, is determined to fare even better in the future following the bronze medal win in the SEA Games.
"After this, I plan to train harder para sa (Southeast Asian) Under-23 in Vietnam," said Esteban.
