FOUR more boxers will battle for the gold medal in the 30th Southeast Asian Games after winning their semifinal bouts on Sunday at the PICC Forum.
Asian Games silver medalist Rogen Ladon beat Hamid Mohamed Hanurdeen of Singapore, 5-0, in the flyweight semifinals to lead the Filipino boxers who will be vying for the gold medal on Monday.
Joining Ladon are Olympian lightweight Charly Suarez and female boxers Irish Magno (flyweight) and lightweight Riza Pasuit.
Making it to the gold-medal rounds a day earlier were Eumir Marcial, Carlo Paalam, and Josie Gabuco.
In all, nine Pinoy boxers will be fighting in the finals of the 13 division on Monday.
Featherweight world champion Nesthy Petecio and men’s light welterweight James Palicte are also in the finals after earning byes.
Suarez, making a return to SEA Games competition after fighting professionally, beat Thanh Dat of Vietnam, 5-0.
The women boxers also made a big splash with Magno beating Jitpong Jutamas of Thailand, 4-1, and Pasuit beating Hasanah Huswatun of Indonesia, 4-1.
The final bouts will begin on Monday, 3 p.m. with Gabuco competing in the first bout against Endang of Indonesia. Magno will battle Nguyen Thi Tam of Vietnam while Petecio faces off against Oo Nwe Ni of Myamnar. Pasuit battles Seesondee Sudaporn of Thailand in the final.
In the men’s side, Paalam competes against Langu Korenlis Kwangu of Indonesia, Ladon takes on Yaodam Ammarit of Thailand, Suarez facing Pidnuch Khunatip of Thailand, and Palicte battling Nuyen Van Hai of Vietnam.
Marcial ends the Philippines’ campaign in boxing with a match-up against Nguyen Manh Cuong of Vietnam.
