KUALA LUMPUR — Dustin Jacob Mella, Raphael Enrico Mella and Rodolfo Reyes Jr. successfully defended their poomsae crown on Saturday in the 29th Southeast Asian Games at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre Hall 1.
The trio scored 8.37 in the taegeuk 8 and 8.43 in the sipjin for an average of 8.40 to win the gold medal.
The Mellas actually captured their third straight gold, having won the first in 2013 with Marvin Gabriel Vidal.
"Iniisip namin na hindi ito pangatlo namin," said the 22-year-old Dustin.
"Ang iniisip namin, kukunin namin as our first. 'Yun pa rin ang drive namin. We don't think that we are defending champions kasi baka maging kampante kami. All out kami. Marami kaming ginawang conditioning and exercises na iba sa last time. Kapag hindi ka nag-iba, hindi mag-iiba 'yung performance mo," said Dustin, a year older than Raphael Enrico.
In the women's division, Jocel Lyn Ninobla, Juvenile Faye Crisostomo, and Rinna Babanto took the bronze after a tally of 8.20 in the taekgeuk 6 and 8.23 in the pyongwon. Vietnam won the gold with a score of 8.43 followed by Thailand with a score of 8.37.
