THE planned sale of the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex has been shelved, for the meantime, according to Makati First District Rep. Monsour Del Rosario.

Del Rosario said he has spoken to Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman William ‘Butch’ Ramirez, who indicated that discussions related to the possible sale of the age-old complex will resume after the Southeast Asian Games to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from August 19 to 31.

“As of now, the last time I spoke to chairman Butch Ramirez, everything is on hold temporarily until after the SEA Games. Talks will resume after the SEA Games regarding that,” said Del Rosario.

A taekwondo standout who competed in the Olympics, Del Rosario is one of the prominent sports personalities opposing the plans by the City of Manila to sell the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex to a developer that plans to turn the property into a mall.

Del Rosario said he has the support of his colleagues in Congress as well as the Philippine Olympians Association, being one of the members of the group.

Del Rosario said his opposition is for the athletes as they will lose a training facility located in Metro Manila.

“Ang main concern ko lang is the training facility ng mga atleta natin, kung saan sila puwedeng mag-train at mag-peprepare. ‘Yun ‘yung purpose ko,” said Del Rosario, who competed for the Philippines in the 1988 Seoul Olympics in taekwondo.
