THE Philippine Sports Commission is seeking an “honest-to-goodness” evaluation of athletes from national sports associations as the Southeast Asian Games Task Force begins to scrutinize the candidates to the delegation bound for the Myanmar showpiece late this year.
PSC chairman Ricardo Garcia said the task force is serious in it plans to send only medal-potential athletes to the SEA Games this year.
“We are asking for an honest-to-goodness assessment of their athletes,” Garcia said on Monday.
The task force led by chief of mission Jeff Tamayo called for a meeting with participating NSAs which submitted their proposed list of athletes for the SEA Games.
Garcia said they have asked each of the NSAs to justify the possible inclusion of an athlete to Team Philippines in the SEA Games.
“This is not a popularity contest. Kung sino ’yung mga mapipili, they have to support it with facts and figures. We are asking for cooperation from the NSAs,” said Garcia.
The PSC chairman had earlier proposed that only a token delegation be sent to Myanmar after organizers scrapped several sports where the Philippines is perennially strong.
