Defiant Peping Cojuangco says POC intends to push through with 2019 SEA Games hosting

    Jul 26, 2017

THE Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) said it plans to push through with the country's hosting of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games even without government support.

POC president Jose 'Peping' Cojuangco said they are looking to arrange a meeting with President Duterte to explain how they will go about with the hosting, even on limited government support.

To minimize and streamline expenses, the POC also plans to declog the calendar for the 2019 SEA Games by holding only Olympic and Asian Games events.

"We are looking at holding only Olympic sports and Asian Games sports," said Cojuangco after the POC general assembly on Wednesday at the Wack Wack Golf and Country Club.

The Philippine Sports Commission, the government's sports arm, on Friday said it will no longer push through with the hosting of the 2019 SEA Games due to the ongoing conflict in Marawi City.

The PSC added it intends to use the funds intended for the hosting to the rehabilitation of the war-torn city.

The government's guarantee to support the SEA Games hosting is vital since it will supply not just funds but also other logistics in terms of immigration, security, traffic, health, and other requirements.

The POC, however, still has the ultimate say on whether the hosting will push through being a member of the SEA Games Federation.

With government funds possibly out of the picture, Cojuangco said the POC also plans to tap the private sector for sponsorships, logistics, and venues, as well as several LGUs for the 2019 hosting.
