Philippines earns shot at sepak takraw gold as doubles team reaches finals

SINGAPORE — The Philippines earned a shot at the gold medal in sepak takraw, advancing to the men’s doubles finals on Monday in the 28th Southeast Asian Games at the Singapore Expo.

Jason Huerte, Emmanuel Escote and Rheyjey Ortuoste frustrated the Singaporean side of Asfandi Bin Ja’al, Muhamad Safie and Mohamed Amran, 21-12, 19-21, 21-16, to earn a ticket to the finals set 7 p.m.

The Filipinos will face Myanmar’s Aung Zaw Zaw, Aung Myo Swe and Zaw Lah, 21-7, 21-9 winners over Laos in the other semifinal.

The Philippines winner of a bronze in Myanmar two years ago, has yet to bag a medal tally in these Games.

Myanmar, on the other hand, has already won two gold and as many silver medals.
