KUALA LUMPUR - The Philippines made a splash in ice hockey's debut in the Southeast Asian Games by winning the gold medal in the men's division at the Empire City Mall.
The Philippine squad beat Thailand, 5-4, to sweep its four assignments in a sport that is making its maiden appearance in the biennial regional event.
The national squad ended the first period with a 3-0 lead, but the Thais fought back to within 3-4 and had the Filipinos under pressure until the final second.
The Philippines beat Indonesia, 12-0, and Singapore, 7-2, before winning in a shootout, 2-1, after a 7-7 tie against host Malaysia early Thursday.
