Philippine water polo team off to hot start in SEA Games with win over Thailand

THE Philippines started its campaign strong, scoring a 9-7 victory over Thailand on Tuesday in the men’s water polo event of the 29th Southeast Asian Games at the National Aquatics Center in Kuala Lumpur.

Skipper Roy Canete delivered a pair of early goals to give Nationals the momentum en route to an impressive victory over the Thais, who bagged the bronze medal two years ago in the Singapore SEA Games.

Kirasit Patarathitina, managed to score in the second period to cut the deficit to one, 1-2.

But Mummar Alamar scored again followed by another by Canete to give the Filipinos a comfortable 4-1 lead at the end of the first half.

Patarathitina scored anew to make it 5-3 but Reynaldo Salonga and Canete restored order to give the Filipinos a 7-3 lead entering the final stretch of the match.

The Philippines will face Malaysia on Wednesday.
