SINGAPORE — The Philippine Volcanoes beat Malaysia, 24-7, on Sunday to win the rugby sevens gold medal in the 28th Southeast Asian Games.
Matthew Saunders scored a try and Alexander Aronson connected on a field goal for a 19-0 lead in the second half and the Volcanoes never looked back
Patrice Olivier also scored a try as well as Justin Coveney and Harry Morris as the led 12-0 at the half.
The Philippines, which is already competing in Asian competitions, dominated the field, winning the gold by an average margin of 26.6 points including a 55-0 win over Cambodia and 43-0 against Laos.
The Volcanoes also beat Malaysia, 14-0, earlier on Sunday before the championship match.
In the women’s side, the Lady Volcanoes beat Malaysia, 22-0, to win the bronze medal.
