THE Philippines opens its campaign in the 30th Southeast Asian Games men’s football competitions against Cambodia on Monday night at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

    Match starts at 8 p.m.

The Azkals Under-22 team expressed optimism about the team’s chances, having veterans Stephan Schrock and Amani Aguinaldo and Justin Baas, with Edison Suerti and Yrick Gallantes having senior national team experience.

“I think it’s the experience that comes with the players that we have now with a lot of six players coming from the men’s team,” said Azkals striker Jarvey Gayoso. “Their experience will help us a lot in learning more about the game and being able to develop as a team and being able to actually work on the chemistry when it comes to playing.”

Gayoso is also happy for the support to the Under-22 team with senior national team manager Dan Palami also helping out the SEA Games squad.

“It starts with the management. We have a new coaching staff. We have a new management for the team. There is a lot of focus and emphasis on the U22 and the development of football. Sir Dan Palami was kind enough to bring the entire Azkals staff to the U22. They are here to help us with the eligible Azkals players able to join us.

“It’s an entirely different team because we have a lot of experience abroad. It’s an entirely different team because we have a lot of experience abroad. We have a lot of international experience. It’s exciting to see and it’s great to have this kind of players bring in their talents here to this team,” said Gayoso.

Fil-Dutch center back Justin Baas is also optimistic about the team’s chances.

“I think there isn’t a high pressure. But we have the quality. We will do our best and that’s we can do. Hopefully, we do good and let’s see if we can reach the semifinals, maybe the finals,” Baas said.
