CAPAS, Tarlac — The Philippines’ bets copped two bronzes in swimming to end their campaign in the 30th Southeast Asian Games on Monday at the New Clark City aquatics center.
The Philippines had a total of 16 medals in swimming, one gold, six silvers and nine bronzes.
Luke Gebbie clocked 22.62 seconds in the men’s 50m freestyle for the bronze, while Jonathan Tan of Singapore finished with a time of 22.25 to eclipse the meet record 22.46.
Jasmine Alkhaldi finished with a time of 1:00.39 in the women’s 100 butterfly, Singapore’s Ting Wen Quah (59.62) and Jing Wen Quah (59.73) bagged the gold and silver respectively.
Meanwhile in the men’s 4x100 medley, the Philippines was disqualified.
Jarod Hatch lost his goggles during the butterfly and did not finish, which also meant Gebbie, set to swim the freestyle, was also not able to compete.
“I think a series of unfortunate events, unfortunately we weren’t able to complete it,” said Gebbie.
“We did well and we would have done well and it’s sports. Sometimes bad things happen and you got to recover and you learn from it and you hit it next time so as a taem, we learn and we move on,” he added.
Gebbie, however, said that he’s not frustrated that they weren’t able to finish the race.
“I’m more concerned, I’m gonna go check on him see if it’s alright. In the end it’s just sport, friendship is the one what matters. I want to make sure he’s alright,” he said. “We rely so much on our goggles and our caps sometimes it just doesn’t work out.”
Singapore bagged the gold (3:38.63), while Indonesia settled for silver (3:43.29).
