KUALA LUMPUR - The Philippines settled for a silver medal in the men's squash team event of the 29th Southeast Asian Games after losing to Singapore, 2-1, on Tuesday night at the National Squash Centre here.

Top Filipino squash player Robert Garcia beat Benedict Chan Jia Wei, 11-8, 9-11, 11-3, 11-9, in the second singles match but Reymark Begornia lost to Pang Ka Hoe, 11-1, 11-3, 11-6, while David Pelino was defeated by Samuel Kang Shan Mu, 11-4, 11-4, 11-5, in the deciding match.

It was a gallant stand by the Philippines, which beat top-seed Malaysia in the semifinal round on Monday.

Garcia said the absence of reserve players may have cost the team in the finals, but was nevertheless happy with the performance of a team that beat top-seeded Malaysia on the way to the final.

"Binigay namin lahat. Actually, hindi kami nakatulog dahil sobrang rineview namin lahat. Hindi natin ine-expect na may chance pa sa gold," said Garcia, who earlier won three bronzes in the squash competition.
