NEW CLARK CITY – Squash finally earned an elusive gold in the Southeast Asian Games, beating Singapore in the mixed team championship round on Friday night at the Manila Polo Club in Makati.

The team of Jemyca Aribado, Robert Garcia, and Raymark Begornia completed a 3-0 sweep of Singapore in the final to give the country its first-ever gold in the sport in the biennial meet.

Aribado beat Wai Yhann Au Yeong in the first singles, 11-7, 11-7, 11-8, Garcia whipped Samuel Shan Mu Kang in the second, 11-7, 11-7, 11-9, before Begornia completed the job with an 11-0, 11-0, 11-0 victory over Aaron Jon Widjaja Liang.

The golden feat was truly a welcome treat for the sport that was in danger of being scrapped in the SEA Games at the last minute owing to the delays in the construction of the squash courts at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.
