PH athletes collect six gold medals in Day 3 of SEA Games

PATTAYA, Thailand – The Philippines enjoyed its most productive gold-medal haul, by far, in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games here.

The Nationals registered six on Friday, with swimmer Kayla Sanchez, sprinter John Cabang Tolentino, and the men’s baseball team among the notables.

Sanchez wrested her second gold medal of this Games, delivering the 100m freestyle diadem at the Sport Authority Thailand Aquatics Center with a time of 54.82 seconds, and adding to the 4x100m freestyle relay she won last Wednesday.

Fellow 2024 Olympian Cabang Tolentino registered a new SEA Games record in the men’s 110m hurdles with a time of 13.66, smashing the old mark of James Rittidet of Thailand by 0.03 seconds, at the Supalachai Stadium.

The first gold medal by a team sport in this SEA Games went to baseball after it defeated Thailand, 5-3, in their home field at the Queen Sirikit Sports Center.

Also on the track, Hokett Delos Santos scored the men’s decathlon gold with a 6,917.

Former world juniors champion Tachiana Mangin bagged one of her first seniors crown of her young career by winning the women’s -49kg crown when she beat Kamonchanok Seeken of Thailand.

John Ivan Cruz produced gymnastics’ second gold medal by becoming the co-champion of the men’s vault along with Aimy Muhammad Sharal of Malaysia.

The silver medalists on Day 3 were Heather White in the swimming 100m freestyle, Xiandi Chua in the swimming 200m backstroke, Rafael Joemari-Heart in the judo 52-57kg, Gabriel Benedict Quitain in the 66-73kg, John Christian Lachica in the karate -60kg, Enrique Lorenzo Enriquez in the shooting skeet individual, Nusair Lao in the taekwondo men’s -68kg, Laila Delo in the taekwondo women’s 73kg, and the mixed doubles petanque team.

The bronze medalists were Andrea Lois Lao in the ju-jitsu women’s Ne-waza 63kg, Santino Luis Luzuriaga in the men’s 62kg Ne-waza, Leonard Grospe in the athletics high jump, Patrick Coo in the BMX time trial, the wakeboard team, Daryl John Mercado in the judo 55kg, Marie June Adriano in the karate women’s -50kg, Maryanne Jenelle Montalbo in the karate women’s -55kg, John Matthew Manantan in the men’s karate -67kg, the men’s and women’s doubles petanque team, Michael Angelo Mengorio in the snooker 6-red ball, and Aljen Aynaga in the taekwondo men’s 58kg.

Alas Pilipinas Women Beach defeated Indonesia, 2-1, to start its beach volleyball campaign in Pattaya.

Over at indoor volleyball, Alas Pilipinas Women defeated Singapore, 25-13, 25-8, 25-18, to advance to the semifinals in volleyball at the Huamark Stadium in Bangkok.
