SUBIC, Zambales — Monica Torres ruled the women’s duathlon to add another gold medal for the Philippines in the 30th Southeast Asian Games at the Subic Bay Boardwalk on Sunday here.
Torres overcame an upset stomach to clock two hours, eight minutes and 44 seconds.
“Actually kaninang umaga, medyo may stomach upset ako, nasuka ako bago magstart,” she bared. “Pero expected ko naman na malakas ‘yung magiging bike ko. Pero ‘yung totoo noong nagba-bike ako lahat ng gel stimulations ko nasuka ko siya sa bike.”

“Ito po ay a different kind of feeling for me, ‘yung sacrifices po in training, lahat naman ng athlete nakakaranas niyan, but special po ‘yung today kasi it’s team Philippines,” said the 35-year-old Torres.
Thailand's Pareeya Sonsem bagged the silver (2:11:18) and Thi Phuong Trinh Nguyen settled for the bronze (2:11:18).
Joey delos Reyes bagged the silver medal in the men’s duathlon.
