NEW CLARK CITY – This time Margarita ‘Meggie’ Ochoa conquered the Southeast Asian Games with a gold performance in the women’s -45 kg event as jiu-jitsu action in the biennial meet gets going Monday at Laus Events Center.
The petite martial artist who won golds in the world and Asian championships, was just too much against Le Thu Trang Dao of Vietnam, scoring a shutout in the final, 13-0, for her first ever gold in the biennial meet.
In the semis, Ochoa whipped Kanjutha Phattaraboonsorn of Thailand, 11-2.
Carlo Pena jumpstarted jiu-jitsu’s campaign by topping the men’s -56 kg event.
Pena beat Indonesian Rengga Richard, 17-2, for the gold.
A third gold was added by Dean Michael Roxas as he topped the men’s 85 kg event, winning by submission against Benjamin Jie Jun Chia of Singapore.
Two silvers were also won by the hosts through Jenna Kaila Napolis and Marc Alexander Lim.
Napolis ended up tied at 2-2 with Cambodian Jessa Khan but the visitor won the gold by advantage, while Lim lost to Banpot Lertthaisong of Thailand, 2-0.
Jui-jitsu action in the SEA Games concludes on Tuesday with five more gold medals at stake.
