PRO boxers Eumir Marcial and Weljon Mindoro will be going for gold in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games.
No less than Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Abraham Tolentino revealed the recent development which will bolster the national boxing team’s chances of winning more gold medals.
“Si Eumir lalaro. Si Mindoro lalaro. Napakiusapan natin na para sa bansa, lumaban naman kahit nasa professional na sila,” said Tolentino on Monday.
The two were initially part of the long list submitted to the Thailand SEA Games Organizing Committee, with Marcial and Mindoro appearing to have already agreed to join the delegation.
Marcial will be seeking for his fifth SEA Games gold even though he is already fighting in the pro ranks. The most recent fight of the Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist being against Eddy Colmenares during the 50th anniversary of the Thrilla in Manila.
Mindoro, meanwhile, is unbeaten with a 15-0-1 win-loss-draw record with the wins of the middleweight fighter coming via knockout.
Boxing accounted for four golds in the Cambodia SEA Games in 2023 with Olympian Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam, Ian Clark Bautista, and Paul Bascon winning those medals.
