BRONZE medals were abound for the Philippines in the karatedo competitions in the 30th Southeast Asian Games Sunday at World Trade Center.

Mae Eso Soriano earned the first bronze in the women's -55 kg kumite, edging Cokistri Agung Sanistyarani of Indonesia, 5-4, in repechage.

It was the next best thing for her after falling to Thai Tippawan Khamsi, 1-5. She earlier topped Abd Rahim Amirah Syadihah of Brunei, 10-3 to get to her class' semis.

Joane Orbon also got the bye in her bronze medal match to get the podium finish in the women's -61 kumite.

She could only heave a huge sigh of relief as the 25-year-old received the luck of the draw despite losing, 1-4, to Mathivani Murugeesan of Thailand in the semis. Orbon earlier beat April Thaw of Myanmar in the quarters.

Jayson Macalalay earned the bronze in the men's -60 kg kumite after topping Thai foe Hein Myint Maung Maung, 4-3 in his own repechage to make up for his 1-3 semis defeat to Thanh Duy Nguyen of Vietnam.
