SINGAPORE — Kiyomi Watanabe beat Thailand’s Orapin Senatham via ippon to win the gold for the Philippines in the judo competitions of the 28th Southeast Asian Games on Sunday.
The 18-year-old Watanabe, the reigning Asian junior champion, also beat opponents from Singapore and Vietnam on the way to the gold-medal match at the EXPO Hall 2 in this island nation.
Watanabe's victory gave the Philippines its sixth gold in the competition - and fifth for ther day following victories by triathlete Nikko Huelgas, wushu artist Daniel Parantac, the Philippine Volcanoes rugby sevens squad, and billiards artists Carlo Biado and Warren Kiamco.
