NEW CLARK CITY – James Deiparine hopes to give Team Philippines a second gold in swimming as he returns to the pool on Sunday in the 30th Southeast Asian Games.
Deiparine sees action in the 50-m breaststroke in the first match of the day at the New Clark City Aquatics Center.
The 26-year-old swimmer topped his heat early in the morning with a clocking of 28.43 seconds, making him the favorite to win the final later in the night.
The time is close to the SEA Games record of 28.25 seconds.
Earlier this week, Deiparine ended the 10-year gold medal drought of Philippine swimming in the SEA Games by topping the men’s 100-meter breaststroke. His winning time of 1:01.4 now stands as the new meet and national marks.
Deiparine claimed the silver medals in the men’s 100-meter and 50-meter breaststroke during the 2017 Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
He’s looking for another sweep, but this time for the gold.
