INDONESIA remained unstoppable as Philippine men’s volleyball team’s inspiring run ended up with silver medal following a 21-25, 25-27, 17-25 defeat in the Final of the 30th South Asian Games on Tuesday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
The Indonesians asserted their dominance and mastery of the Filipino Spikers to complete a perfect run, sweeping five games without dropping a single set to rule the biennial meet.
Just like their group stage battle, Rivan Nurmukli, Doni Haryono, Sigit Ardian and Putu Randu were the tormentors of home side, displaying another efficient attacking to outplay the dynamic duo of Marck Espejo and Bryan Bagunas.
Though the the team failed to capture its dream gold, the Filipino Spikers kept their heads up cherishing the support of capacity crowd and remained proud of their silver medal finish that can raise the profile of Philippine men's volleyball.
Indonesia was 50-of-100 in attacking to sweep Philippines in a Final that lasted for an hour and 29 minutes.
Haryono brought the Indonesians to the promise land, nailing 20 of his 29 attack attempts. Nurmukli delivered 17 points, while Ardian added 11 markers including 15 excellent receptions.
“Sa performance namin medyo nagkaproblema pero sabi ko nga motivation namin meron na tayong medal,” said National team head coach Dante Alinsunurin. “Kailangan lang bago matapos set, ang mindset maging maayos pa rin takbo ng laro.”
Espejo led the Pinoys with 15 points and 16 excellent receptions, while Bagunas had 11 points. Rex Intal had nine points.
“Yung Indonesia talaga ginamit height and power siguro mas lamang sila sa experience,” Espejo said. “Pero yun nga masaya kami even though talo kami ginawa namin best namin hanggang dito lang kinaya.”
