CHONBURI – The Philippine weightlifting team started the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in heartbreak after Rosegie Ramos had a DNF (Did Not Finish) in the women’s 48kg division at the Chonburi Sports School.
A cinch for a podium finish based from previous performances, the 21-year-old Ramos failed in all her attempts to lift 100 kilos once and 102 kilos twice. She was in the hunt for a medal after being in joint second with two other lifters in the snatch with 83 kilos.
Ramos, a bronze medalist in the 2024 Asian Championships, was immediately in tears after she failed to lift 102 in her final try that would have clinch the gold medal.

The Zamboanga native and cousin of Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz admitted nerves got to her when she failed to lift her first attempt at 100 cleanly.
“Sobrang sakit ‘yung nangyari kasi fighting for gold din. Sayang, hindi ko nakuha ‘yung goal ko,” said Ramos, who will turn 22 on Monday.
“Thankful pa rin ako sa mga coaches ko at teammates ko. Siguro, everything happens for a reason. Pero sa ngayon, masakit pa rin talaga kasi magbi-birthday din ako. Kala ko, ‘yung ang gift ni God," said Ramos, also two-time Asian juniors champion.
"Baka mas may best pa na darating,”
Luluk Diana Tri Wijayana of Indonesia bagged the gold with a 184 total, while world championship bronze medalist Thanyathon Sukcharoen of Thailand placed second with a 183. Nguyen Thi Thu Trang of Vietnam placed third with 181.
Ramos said she plans to go up in weight next year.
